Project Description

February 2022 – A love for nature and passion for education are the two beams of light that shine through David Wood’s life. It all began on an island where David grew up in rural Stevington, England. As the son of teachers, David’s childhood was immersed in learning and nature amongst miles of sunflowers and endless meadows. Without traffic lights or even a gas station, village life presented a pristine landscape for nature to take root in David and it would shape his life’s ambitions.

He moved to North Carolina as a teen where he discovered the breathtaking Blue Ridge mountains and waterfalls. It was there that he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Studies at University of North Carolina in Asheville. His passion for science and the environment lured him across the country and he worked in city and state parks as well as for prestigious institutions such as North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Here he serves an Environmental Educator while pursuing a communications master’s degree from Hawai`i Pacific University. What he loves most about Hawai`i is the diversity of life in the islands that has species that are unique and rare.

His motto is “In nature we are a part not apart. Every day we are finding our place to live within the rhythms of nature.” David has this to say about his work at HNC: “This is an extremely exciting time to be in children’s education. Students are enjoying field trips and shared learning. We’re all emerging from the pandemic with a renewed sense of wonder, curiosity and belonging.”
