Project Description

Aloha mai kākou! My name is Chai (pronounced “Kai”); I grew up in Arizona and have been living on Oʻahu since 2009.

My love of nature brought me to HNC as a teaching docent in 2012. At that time, I realized I very much enjoyed teaching and working with kids! Over the years, I’ve had various roles at HNC: Lead Environmental Educator, Program Coordinator, and Interim Program Manager. I now primarily teach as a lecturer at Leeward Community College in Pacific Islands Studies and Hawaiian Studies, but I am very happy to still be part of the HNC ‘ohana as a part-time Environmental Educator.

I am passionate about deepening childrens’ connection with their island home through Hawaiian culture and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

When Iʻm not teaching, youʻll find me dancing (hula and Tahitian), playing music (‘ukulele and guitar), enjoying the ocean (snorkeling and surfing), or hiking forest trails.
