Plunge into polar ecosystems this winter season. Journey from sunny islands to icy poles as we explore how climate connects us to arctic habitats and wildlife. Defrost the mysteries of our many amazing migratory species and what we can do to protect them.
Jump into the new year as we explore fun ways to take care of our planet. We’ll discover how small actions can have big impacts on our environment. Spend the week playing outdoor games, creating eco-friendly crafts, and making awesome green resolutions.
Come learn about how the Hawaiian tradition of voyaging is intertwined with nature, as Hawaiian and Polynesian voyagers have known for thousands of years. We’ll honor and learn about ties to greater Oceania as well as the modern-day voyages of Hōkūle’a through action-filled games and crafts.
Join us in becoming sustainability superheroes! Our world needs everyone’s help to ensure a greener future, so this week we’ll be learning about where the earth needs our help as we adventure along the streamside and forest floor. It’s time to put on our superhero capes and use teamwork to fight climate change and build hope for our future!
Take a deep breath of fresh forest air and see how exploring in nature not only brings fun, exercise, and new friends but also improves our wellbeing. Join us as we learn about plants that nourish our minds and bodies. Students will participate in mindful nature hikes, become attuned with their senses while fishing, and, most importantly, feel connected to the natural world.
Did you know there’s nature all around us? From mountains to farms to our neighborhoods and backyards, learn about the interconnectedness of wild places to human made spaces. COVID-19 SAFETY Keeping children, families and our staff safe is our highest priority. Health and safety measures are in place to keep participants safe. Modifications include smaller group size to accommodate social distancing. We’ve added six feet of social distancing in our seating arrangements. Masks must be worn inside and on field trip buses. More frequent and easier-to-monitor hand washing is required. Frequent disinfecting of surfaces and high traffic areas are performed. Since our programs are outdoors, we have lots of room to spread out and enjoy the fresh air while exploring nature.
Our main theme this summer, Hawaiian Habitats, will take us on an island-wide exploration of four different ecosystems: forests, wetlands, coastlines, and streams. Each week, we will feature a place representing one of these four ecosystems. We will learn about that specific place and the science and culture behind it, then visit it on our field trip so we can experience everything we’ve learned. Locations will rotate throughout the summer but will likely include: Mānoa Cliff Trail, Judd Trail, Hāmakua Marsh, Hūnānāniho, Moanalua Valley Trail, Maunalua Bay, and more.
*We will not be swimming during any part of these weeks … but we will get wet and muddy!*
Water is life. Freshwater is key to both humans and animals, especially here in Hawaiʻi. We will learn all about the water cycle, where our drinking water comes from, and the importance of freshwater in Hawaiian culture. Join us for hands-on exploration of freshwater streams, water-themed games, and watercolor painting!
