The trails and forest are not part of the nonprofit Hawaiʻi Nature Center, which operates programs for schools and students. It is closed to the general public. Nearby trails are public lands maintained, managed and owned by government: State of Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) office. Trail maps are at www.hawaiitrails.org.
Following significant flooding damage and Covid shutdowns, Hawai’i Nature Center decided to sell it’s ‘Iao property in 2022 to embrace a “mobile” program model. HNC will be conducting its School and Nature Adventure Camp programs at various locations (such as Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge) across the island in order to make programs more accessible to schools and families.
