2131 Makiki Heights Dr., Honolulu | Call: 808.955.0100 x123 | Email: emma@hawaiinaturecenter.org

Nature exploration and artistic imagination come together as students create illustrations for the children’s book “Kawika Hikes in the Mountains” authored by the late Sara Marie Riley. Enrollees must participate in all 3 days to build on their work. This Art & Nature Camp series is for keiki, ages 8 to 12 years-old. The three-day workshop series will be held on Saturdays: January 21, January 28, and February 4 from 1 to 4 pm.

Completed illustrations will be compiled with the text and featured as a digital book on our website. Keiki artists will be featured in the book credits. Cost is $90 (members) and $120 (non-members) for the three-day series.

Saturday, January 21

After introductions, we read through the story we’ll be illustrating: “Kawika Hikes in the Mountains;’ by Sara Marie Riley. We then take an exploratory hike through Makiki valley to collect references for the plants, animals, and scenes. Returning, we will then spend some time learning about the different artistic media we can use.

Saturday, January 28

Brainstorm our main characters’ appearance and assign sections that will be illustrating. Using reference and collecting more if needed, we get started on our first draft sketches and experiment with the different media. We finish the day by re-gathering and sharing drafts for friendly critique, then cool off in Makiki stream.

Saturday, February 4

A final day to create our finished illustrations. Campers will complete the day with art that will be scanned and featured online in this online book. We also take photos to credit our campers in the book’s afterward.

COVID-19 SAFETY  Keeping children, families and our staff safe is our highest priority.  Health and safety measures are in place to keep participants safe. Modifications include smaller group size to accommodate social distancing. We’ve added six feet of social distancing in our seating arrangements. Facemasks are optional. More frequent and easier-to-monitor hand washing is required. Frequent disinfecting of surfaces and high traffic areas are performed. Since our programs are outdoors, we have lots of room to spread out and enjoy the fresh air while exploring nature.
