Project Description
March 2021 – Hawai‘i Nature Center was conceived by Margaret Young and the Outdoor Circle. It was originally known as the Makiki Environmental Center, which dates back to the late 1970s to provide interpretation of the past and present environment of Hawai‘i for the general public and school and community groups. The Hawai‘i Nature Center became its own non-profit in the summer of 1981 and expanded to ‘Īao Valley on Maui 10 years later.
The foresight of our founders to create an broad-reaching organization that would have profound impact on Hawai‘i’s nature resources, environmental protection and education for 40 years is inspiring.
Today, our award-winning programs are among the best things to do for kids on Oahu and Maui. We offer week-long school break camps and day programs. Enroll here.
