Project Description
September 2021 – As the headline in this 2000 article from Honolulu Star-Bulletin reads, we are coming full circle in reuniting with this little girl. The caption reads: Gina Galmiche holds a plant while she and her classmates learn about the cycles of nature at the Hawai`i Nature Center. Second-graders from Kapalama Elementary got to play in the nature center’s playroom. The kids from Shellie Yamada’s and Velma Akinaka’s classes learned about the five cycles of nature: water, nutrient, plant, gas and animal.
With a little help from social media we set out to find this little girl 21 years later. We found her. Gina is now 29 years old and teaches at Manoa Elementary school. She currently works in a resource position but has taught 4th grade for four years leading the Hawaiian History curriculum for the grade level. Her love for nature still stems today.passes it on to her own students by teaching them about native plants and animals of Hawaii and how they can play a part in helping our environment thrive. In her free time, she enjoys nature by the ocean and relaxing at the beach.
Check out our Facebook or Instagram to see our keiki who romp, explore and study with us. We hope they grow up like Gina and find ways to pass on a love for nature to the next generation.
