For ages 6 to 11, camp allows students to foster a deeper connection with the natural world, go tech-free and high-touch in nature in a multi-day program led by expert environmental educators. Drop-off and pick-up is at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens or Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.

Scholarships are available on a limited basis for Maui students enrolled in a Free/Reduced Lunch program at any Hawai‘i Department of Education school. Click here to apply and email the application here.

Spring 2026:  Mauka Meets Makai | This week is sold out.

Students will build a deeper connection to our coastlines as we explore the unique ecosystems that surround our island. Through hands-on experiences in wetlands, tidepools, and along coastal trails, keiki will learn about the ecology of these places and how to care for them. Join us for a fun-filled week of crafts, activities and field trips designed to deepen our coastal connections.

Week 1 | June 1-5: Our isolated islands: Hawaiʻi's Most Unique Creatures

At Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Join us as we learn about endemic animals of Hawaiʻi-kahulisnails, yellow-faced bees, aeʻobirds, monk seals and more. Each day keiki will learn about a different animal found only in Hawaiʻi. For our field excursions, we will journey from coasts to forests as we explore the habitats of these critters. Afternoons will be filled with crafts, games, and other fun lessons.

Week 2 | June 8-12: Plants of Polynesia

At Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Keiki will learn about the different native and canoe plants of Hawai’i and how they got here. Each day will highlight a new plant, its moʻolelo(story), historic cultural and modern day uses. After learning plant identification, campers will embark on field excursions to find the plants in their habitats across Maui. Finally, each day will include crafts and hands-on activities with each native plant.

Week 3 | June 22-26: Mālama ʻĀina: Past, Present and Future

At Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Follow Maui’s history from Hawaiʻi’s volcanic formation to modern life on the islands. Keiki will learn about the Hawaiian hotspot theory, the first Polynesian inhabitants, ancient petroglyphs and ruins, and the rich history of environmental stewardship embedded within the islands’ culture. While hiking and exploring, students will discover how make positive impact on island ecosystems today.

Week 4 | July 13-17 (for ages 9 to 13 only): Mālama Maui

At Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. This week will be full of fun adventures and hands-on mālama ʻāinaservice learning. Join us as we partner with local organizations to learn about and give back to the land. Hear from conservation specialists in their fields and why they chose their various vocations. Activities will include mountain hikes, native planting, restoration work and more. Designed for 9–13-year-olds who enjoy hiking and working with their hands.

Week 5 | July 20-24: All About Avian

At Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Students will spend each day learning about Hawaiʻi birds, including native Hawaiian wetland birds, migratory birds, Native Hawaiian forest birds, and seabirds. Field trips will be geared towards observing these birds and their behaviors in the wild, and hiking into their different habitats. In addition to field adventures, campers will spend time making crafts and other fun hands-on activities.

Week 6 | July 27-31: Wai of Hawaiʻi

At Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Come learn about the importance of freshwater on Maui. Students will journey to different streams across the island, visit a loʻi kalopatch, search for aquatic organisms, and more! Join our stream ʻsplorations with water-related hands-on activities, games and crafts.

Day Camp Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

Gear Up & Get Ready

  • Eat a hearty breakfast.
  • Wear clothes and closed-toe (hiking or athletic) shoes  that can get wet and dirty.
  • Put on mosquito repellent and sunscreen at home.
  • Leave anything expensive, valuable or fragile at home.

What to Pack Daily

  • Small backpack
  • Water bottle
  • Morning snacks and big lunch (no refrigeration)
  • Extra change of clothes, raincoat/poncho and water shoes
  • Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  • COVID face masks (optional)

CANCELLATION POLICY  We reserve the right to cancel if minimum enrollment is not met. In this rare case, we will contact you as soon as possible and refund the program cost. If you cancel within 7 days of the first day of each camp, enrollment is non-refundable for any reason. Camps are non-transferable and cannot be resold or exchanged. If you need to cancel your registration for any reason, email us as soon as possible. Cancellation fee policy does not apply to scholarship recipients registering for Nature Adventure Camp.

REFUND POLICY  With at least seven-days notice prior to the program’s start, we will refund your tuition. A $50 cancellation fee per child per week and administrative processing fees will be charged. Memberships purchased during enrollment are non-refundable.

THIRD-PARTY REGISTRATION POLICY  Hawaiʻi Nature Center does not accept third-party registrations on behalf of other friends or family–the registering child’s parent or guardian must be the individual to complete and submit all registration information. If we determine that a third party has completed your child’s registration, your registration will be cancelled and we will refund your tuition. A $50 cancellation fee per child per week and administrative processing fees will be charged.

COVID-19 SAFETY  Keeping children, families and our staff safe is our highest priority.  Health and safety measures are in place to keep participants safe. Modifications include smaller group size to accommodate social distancing. We’ve added six feet of social distancing in our seating arrangements. Masks must be worn inside and on field trip buses. More frequent and easier-to-monitor hand washing is required. Frequent disinfecting of surfaces and high traffic areas are performed. Since our programs are outdoors, we have lots of room to spread out and enjoy the fresh air while exploring nature.
